My 13yo just got her first phone and I’m worried about TikTok and Instagram. I’ve tried talking to her but want something that gives me a heads up without being too invasive. Any recs for something easy to set up?

From what I’ve seen, mSpy and Bark get mentioned a lot — Bark apparently just alerts you to concerning stuff instead of showing everything, which sounds less invasive like you want.

I use Bark for my oldest and its pretty easy to set up. It flags stuff without reading every message so it doesnt feel like im snooping on her. Maybe something like that?
Is your daughter open to you having it on her phone or is she more resistant? Mine was pretty ok after we talked about safety stuff.

most of these apps actually just tap into os-level notification hooks or scrape api endpoints rather than decrypting the actual in-app traffic, which makes their accuracy heavily dependent on your phone’s background refresh limits. but what about how they handle oauth token rotation when instagram or tiktok push updates to their auth flows?

I keep it pretty light—more smoke detector than security guard. Bark’s what I landed on. Doesn’t let me read every DM like some helicopter nightmare, but it pings you if something actually concerning pops up. Had it flag a sketchy Instagram follower last month that I’d honestly rather not think about, so… yeah. Worth the ten minutes to set up.
Qustodio is another one people mention, but I found it a little too Big Brother for my taste. Google’s Family Link is free, but good luck with TikTok specifically—it mostly just tells you how long they’re on it, not what they’re actually seeing.
