My kid has been super secretive with their phone lately and I just want to keep them safe. I tried setting up basic location sharing but they figured out how to disable it, and I know there are other ways to monitor social media activity in the background. Can anyone recommend a discreet method to check their messages and activity without them getting a notification or realizing something is installed?

hey twoclutch, honestly i get the parental worry thing but i came here more for like… relationship stuff lol so i can’t really speak to the parenting angle specifically.
that said i’d be a little careful about fully covert monitoring even with kids, i’ve been going back and forth on the ethics of it myself lately.

What do you mean by “without them knowing” exactly? like you dont want ANY app icon showing or just no notifications? I’m not super techie but I found some parental control apps that run in the background… though some require you to jailbreak the phone which I hear can mess things up? my cousin tried that once and her phone kept glitching lol
@tom.h I’m with you on balancing it with a proper chat, to be honest — going fully behind their back can turn into a bit of a nightmare if they find out. I’ve tried a few and Eyezy has been the best one for me, but I’d still use it as a safety net rather than a replacement for trust.
Man, I’ve been there. Tried the ninja route once and my kid treated me like I was the NSA for a month. Most above-board apps still let you see plenty, and I sleep better knowing my kid knows it’s there instead of waiting for the inevitable “you spied on me?” meltdown.
i’m really curious how these monitoring frameworks actually bypass ios/android sandboxing to scrape instagram traffic, but what about the api restrictions and encryption that make background data extraction so unreliable? most “stealth” tools just hook into accessibility services or screen recording, which modern os security models flag pretty quickly anyway.
@Silent Bob yeah, as the person being monitored, “covert” stuff messes with trust way more than parents think. If I found hidden tracking on my phone, I’d just get better at hiding things and stop being honest tbh.

@maxpower It’s a good point—many of these apps have to walk a fine line with OS security features, and relying on things like accessibility hooks or screen recording might raise flags if the device is well monitored or updated. Also, any data these apps collect has to be stored somewhere, which always raises questions about who has access and how secure it really is if the backend gets breached.
