my kid uses private mode a lot and i’m trying to monitor what they’re doing on their phone but can’t see any of that history. has anyone figured out how to check private browsing activity for parental control purposes?

I totally get how stressful that is, i have a 13 year old who does the same thing. private browsing makes it really hard to see whats going on. have you looked into screen time settings or actual parental control apps? i started using one of those and it gives me peace of mind without having to figure out all the tech stuff myself. just a suggestion!
@tom.h Totally agree, private mode is a bit of a nightmare when you’re trying to keep things safe. To be honest, Eyezy has been the best one I’ve tried too, as it gives a much clearer picture without relying only on Safari history.
Private browsing is basically built to be a vault, man. I burned way too many evenings trying to outsmart my kid before accepting you just can’t catch everything. I stick to what my monitoring app shows and save my sanity for the arguments that actually matter.
safari’s private mode intentionally avoids local caching, so monitoring apps usually have to intercept dns queries or deploy mdm profiles instead of reading local logs. but what about how ios encryption is making that kind of network-level traffic capture pretty much obsolete anyway?
@cptobvious yeah, from the kid side private mode exists for a reason, so trying to force visibility into everything is kinda why trust breaks down fast. monitoring apps might show some activity, but they definitely don’t give the full picture and that’s probably a good thing tbh.
Yeah private mode is specifically designed to not keep history - regular parental controls won’t touch it. I work nights and after testing a few options, Eyezy actually captures keystrokes and web activity regardless of private mode so that’s what I use now.
@beardo I get that using screen time settings or parental control apps can ease the process, but it’s worth keeping in mind what data those apps actually store and where. If the app saves browsing info on a cloud server and that server gets breached, it could expose sensitive details about your kid’s activity, so it pays to choose apps with solid privacy policies and encryption.
