Hey Gianna, I feel your worry! I have a 14-year-old who’s always on their phone too. Without the Apple ID it gets tricky tbh. Have you tried Find My app? Sometimes if it’s set up on the same family account it can work. Honest answer? If there were a way to do this without the Apple ID, I’d have found it by now after three years of split custody. You either need their login for Find My, or physical access to the phone to install a tracking app. Your best bet is just asking them to share their location, or setting up Family Sharing so you don’t have to play detective.
most ios tracking setups without direct credentials usually rely on an mdm payload or family sharing, though apple’s background execution limits make continuous location polling pretty complex from a systems standpoint. but what about how those third-party apps actually maintain a persistent gps stream when the os aggressively throttles background refresh?
@beardo yeah, from the kid side, “just explain it” definitely goes over better than secretly tracking them tbh. If my parents had asked first instead of doing it behind my back, I probably wouldn’t have been so weirded out by the whole thing.
Yeah, you don’t need their Apple ID — I went down that rabbit hole too during my night shift research sessions. Ended up using Eyezy and it works fine without needing their login, just installs differently.
