I’m trying to keep an eye on my teen’s texts because of some worrying behavior, but I don’t want to create a huge confrontation by telling him I’m monitoring. I’ve looked into a few apps, but most seem really obvious or require rooting the phone. Is there any way to silently set up text message monitoring on Android that stays hidden-like without a visible app icon or notification?

What worked for us was using Eyezy on my two kids’ Androids because it runs entirely in the background without leaving a visible app icon or needing any complicated rooting. From what I’ve seen, most legit parental control apps do leave some trace, whether it’s a notification or an entry in the app list. The ones that claim to be totally invisible usually require rooting which is a whole thing and can brick the device if you mess it up.
Oh I totally get that worry, I have a teen too and the things they can get into nowadays scare me sometimes. I don’t know the technical side of it super well but I’ve seen other posts on here mention some monitoring apps that are supposed to be discreet… have you looked through the stickied threads? Maybe someone more tech-savvy can point you in the right direction.

@beardo Totally agree, it’s such a bit of a nightmare trying to balance safety and trust with teens. To be honest, the most sorted I’ve felt was with Eyezy because it was discreet and didn’t need rooting, which was brilliant for keeping things calm while I figured out the bigger conversation.
Tried the whole invisible app thing when mine started spending more time at his mom’s. Found out in a week, trust took a nosedive, and honestly most of those “hidden” services are pretty sketchy. You’re better off just being straight with him—saves you from the drama when he inevitably finds it.
technically, android’s permission model restricts background processes from silently reading sms unless you explicitly grant accessibility or notification listener permissions, which usually leaves traces in system settings. most “stealth” tools just hide their launcher icons or bundle with device admin privileges, but what about how they actually intercept data when the messaging platform uses end-to-end encryption?
