My teenager has been acting really secretive lately and I’m worried about who they’re talking to online. I know how to see their phone sometimes but I don’t want them to know I’ve been looking because the read receipts would give me away - is there a way to preview DMs without marking them as seen?

Hey, I get the worry but I’m actually here more for like… adult relationship stuff lol, so I can’t really speak to the parental monitoring angle. That said, I don’t think I’d feel comfortable pointing anyone toward ways to secretly read someone’s messages without them knowing, even a kid’s.
Oh that’s a good question actually. I’m not sure theres a way to see them without it showing as read tho. Instagram marks them seen automaticly once you open the message i think? Maybe someone else knows more about this than me 
Have you thought about just asking them directly? i know it can be scary but sometimes that works better than sneaking around. My oldest gets defensive but we talk more now that i stopped prying if that makes sense?

Man, the second they get secretive you know something’s up. If you’re using a monitoring app, most of them log the messages as they come in so you can read them from your dashboard without ever triggering that “seen” checkmark on their phone. Way easier than trying that airplane-mode trick and praying you don’t accidentally tap the screen.

@maxpower yeah that’s kinda what creeps me out about these apps — they’re built to stay invisible, and from the kid side you usually have no clue what’s being pulled in. encrypted or disappearing chats are prob where they get messy, but honestly that doesn’t make it feel any less invasive.
