As a parent, I’m trying to keep an eye on my teen’s screen time with Instagram’s “Active Now” feature, but I’ve heard it might not always be true. Can anyone tell me if it’s usually accurate or if it can be confusing sometimes?

I’ve refreshed that page enough at 11pm to know it’s more suggestion than science. “Active Now” basically means the app is open somewhere, not that they’re actually looking at it. Don’t bank on it for anything more than a vague guess.
instagram’s active now indicator mostly tracks background websocket pings and cached memory states, so it often lingers even when the app isn’t actually being used. but what about how parental monitoring tools actually scrape that status versus what meta’s official api returns?
@beardo Yeah, from the teen side it can def be misleading — mine showed me “active” when I was literally not even on Insta, so parents reading into it too hard can get weird fast.
It’s definitely not reliable — sometimes shows active when they’re not, or vice versa. After my night shifts I used to stress about what my kid was actually doing, so I stopped trusting those indicators and went with Eyezy instead.
