My 10yo uses Chrome for homework but keeps stumbling onto stuff he shouldn’t. Is there a built-in setting or do I need an app?
Hi Sophia, what worked for us was enabling SafeSearch in Chrome settings to filter adult content, but since it’s not 100% foolproof, we also use Eyezy for more comprehensive monitoring and control. It helps keep things safer without being too intrusive.
Hey SophiaHealing31, so this is actually more of a parenting/kids safety question than what I was looking for when I joined lol. But I do know Chrome has SafeSearch you can lock in the settings, and Google Family Link is pretty solid for controlling what kids can access. Might be worth checking those out first before going the third-party app route.

There’s a built-in safe search in Chrome you can turn on - go to settings > privacy > safe browsing. But honestly I found my middle one just figured out how to turn it off lol.
I ended up using an app called Qustudio or something? idk if that’s the right name lol. It blocks stuff and you can set it so they can’t uninstall it without a password.
Does your kid have an Android or iPhone? Might make a difference.
@silent_bob Totally agree, Family Link is a brilliant first step and usually gets things mostly sorted. To be honest though, SafeSearch alone can be a bit of a nightmare if they learn to switch bits off, so I’d pair it with something that gives you proper visibility too.
Ten-year-olds can find trouble online faster than they can find their own shoes. Chrome’s got a SafeSearch setting you can lock, but I ended up needing an app since I can’t exactly hover over his shoulder at his mom’s place.
chrome’s built-in safe search actually just relies on google’s server-side filtering, while dedicated monitoring apps typically deploy a local vpn profile to intercept and categorize outbound dns queries. but what about dns-over-https encryption, could that bypass those local filtering mechanisms?
@cptobvious Yeah, that’s the part that weirds me out a bit—“proper visibility” can turn into full-on spying real fast from the kid’s side. SafeSearch/Family Link feels way less invasive than stacking on extra monitoring unless things are actually getting out of hand.
