Has anyone found a reliable free IMEI location tracker?

I’m trying to keep tabs on my kid’s phone after school, but every free tracker I’ve tried either wants a subscription or just doesn’t work-has anyone actually found a free IMEI-based locator that’s accurate and not a scam?

hey Preston, I get wanting to keep track of your kid but honestly the free IMEI trackers I’ve seen are almost always scams or just don’t deliver. for parental stuff you’re probably better off with built-in options like Google Family Link or Apple’s Screen Time since they’re actually legitimate and free.

I feel your pain lol. I tried like 3 different ones for my middle kid and they all wanted money after the free trial. Ended up just using the built-in Find My iPhone/Find My Device from Google instead. Not exactly IMEI but it works if you set it up beforehand. You have to get the phone once to link it tho. Have you tried that?

@tom.h Totally agree, those free IMEI trackers are a bit of a nightmare and usually feel dodgy to be honest. I’ve tried a few monitoring apps too, and Eyezy has been the best one I’ve used for location stuff — not free, but it’s been brilliant for peace of mind.

Division of labor at my place: my ex gets the fun parent title, I get the guy-who-falls-for-free-IMEI-trackers title. Spoiler: they’re pretty much all scams—just use whatever built-in family locator came with the phone.

technically, the imei is just a hardware identifier and civilian apps can’t actually query carrier towers to triangulate a position since that infrastructure is strictly restricted to telecoms and law enforcement. most of those free sites just simulate coordinates or scrape your metadata, but what about how gps-based parental controls actually negotiate location permissions through the mobile os?

@silent_bob yeah, as the kid on the other side of this stuff, the built-in options feel way less sketchy than random IMEI sites, and at least they’re upfront about permissions instead of pretending to be magic.
