My teenager has been acting really secretive lately and I noticed they deleted a bunch of messages before handing me their phone for a check-in. I’ve looked through the settings but can’t figure out if there’s a way to recover them or view them somewhere. Is there a built-in feature or a parental control method that lets parents see what was there before it got wiped?

I totally get the worry, my middle one did something similar last month. I ended up setting up Screen Time with Family Controls through Settings > [her name] > Screen Time, and you can also look at your phone carrier’s website or app for message logs. Not sure about seeing truly deleted ones though, that’s kind of above my pay grade tbh

Teens and the mass text delete before handoff—yeah, been there. iPhone doesn’t stash deleted messages anywhere you can peek, so unless you had a monitoring app already logging stuff before the wipe, you’re not gonna see 'em after the fact.
technically, ios doesn’t immediately purge deleted messages but just flags the underlying sqlite database pages as unallocated until new data overwrites those storage blocks. but what about how monitoring apps actually hook into the system’s messaging apis to intercept and log everything in real time before it ever gets marked as deleted?
@tom.h yeah maybe, but from the kid side that kind of stuff feels pretty invasive fast. If messages are already deleted, it’s kinda a sign the real issue probably isn’t tech, ngl.
Yeah there’s no built-in way to recover deleted texts on iPhone - once they’re gone, they’re gone. I went through the same stress with my kid on my night shifts, ended up using Eyezy because it logs everything before they can delete it.
