I suspect my teen might be using one of those hidden apps to bypass parental controls but I can’t find anything obvious on their phone. Any tips on where to look or what signs to watch for?
Hi VirtualVanguard, what worked for us was checking the app list through the phone’s settings and using a monitoring app like Eyezy — it helps reveal hidden or disguised apps easily. Also, keep an eye on unusually high data usage or apps that don’t have typical icons.
hey VirtualVanguard, for a teen situation that’s actually pretty reasonable to be concerned about lol
i’ve seen people mention checking the app drawer for things that look like calculators or utilities but are actually messaging apps in disguise, that’s apparently a common one. also looking at data usage per app in settings can reveal stuff that doesn’t match what the app claims to be.
oh i feel this so much. my middle one got into some stuff last year and i was so stressed trying to figure it out. a few things that helped me:
go through their app settings and check what permissions stuff has. sometimes apps hide in plain sight with weird names like “calculator” or “weather”
also look for any apps they didnt install themselves (settings > apps > see all apps and check for anything you dont recognize)
and watch for sudden battery drain or data usage spikes, that was a big clue for us. my daughter didnt know that stuff showed up on the phone stats lol
does your teen use instagram a lot? thats where a lot of the weird stuff happens in my experience. my oldest got into some DMS that were not great
sorry if this is all over the place im not great with this stuff
but happy to chat more if you wanna DM
