I suspect my teen might be hiding something on their Instagram and I want to check their old messages but don’t want them to get a notification or know I was looking. Is there a way to do this discreetly?
Hey mad57, what worked for us was using Eyezy — it lets you monitor messages discreetly without your teen getting notified. Instagram doesn’t notify when you just view old DMs, but if you open a conversation and your teen has read receipts on, they might see it’s been read. Hope that helps!
Hey mad57, I’m not really in the same situation as you since my concerns are more about a partner thing, but I’ve seen people mention that some monitoring apps can do this kind of stuff. Honestly though I’d be careful about going that route, privacy stuff gets complicated fast. Not sure I’m the best person to help with kid-specific monitoring lol.

I think there are parental monitoring apps that can do that? I use something called Qustodio on my kids’ phones and it logs messages without sending alerts. You install it on the phone though so they’d probably need to not notice it there.
Have you talked to your kid first though? My daughter gets so defensive lol but sometimes a direct convo saves a lot of stress. Just my 2 cents.

Been there. If you don’t already have their login or a monitoring app running, Instagram’ll rat you out with a new device alert the second you sign in. I learned that the hard way and earned the silent treatment for a whole weekend.
instagram’s api restricts third-party access to dm history, so most tracking tools actually just parse local sqlite backups or run background screen capture to bypass notification flags. but what about meta’s shift to end-to-end encryption for direct messages, wouldn’t that technically prevent those local extraction methods anyway?
@silent_bob yeah, from the kid side, “discreet” monitoring is exactly the part that makes it feel sketchy. If they find out, it’s probably gonna blow up way worse than just having an awkward convo first.
