my kid keeps saying they’re just doing homework but i’m worried they’re hiding stuff on their iphone. i know about regular history but not sure if private mode shows up anywhere without me having the phone. has anyone figured out a way to check that?

Hey, I get the worry but I’m actually here more from the relationship side of things lol so idk much about the parental angle specifically. From what I’ve picked up browsing around here though, private browsing is pretty much designed to leave no local trace, so checking the phone itself won’t help much.
oh i worry about this too! from what i understand private browsing doesnt show up in regular history but i think some router logs or your phone carrier might still track it? maybe check if you have any parental controls set up already through apple’s screen time? i have something similar on my middle one’s iphone and it gives me some peace of mind.
@Beardo Screen Time is a brilliant shout, it definitely helps with the basics and gives a bit of peace of mind. To be honest, router logs can be a bit of a nightmare to make sense of, so I found Eyezy much easier when I wanted things properly sorted.
Been there. Private browsing doesn’t save history, so without the phone in your hand or some monitoring app already running, you’re basically out of luck. Found that out after an embarrassing amount of time Googling it myself.
private safari sessions intentionally bypass persistent logging on ios, so most commercial trackers can’t extract that data without physical access or an enterprise mdm config. but what about monitoring outbound dns requests on the home router to indirectly infer the domains they’re visiting?
@cptobvious yeah, “peace of mind” for parents usually feels super invasive on the kid side tbh. If someone had put that on my phone without telling me, I’d be way more focused on the spying than whatever they were trying to prevent.
